Currently Learning .v1

This summer, in between job applications, I’ve been taking two certificate courses from Udemy: The Complete 2023 Web Development Bootcamp, offered by Angela Yu and The App Brewery, and The Data Science Course: Complete Data Science Bootcamp, offered by 365 careers.

Web Development

My web development goals include gaining a deeper understanding of JavaScript and becoming familiar with frequently-used tools such as React.js. While I have a good foundation in HTML5/CSS from creating my own websites over the years, I’m less familiar with JavaScript and I’m appreciating the crash course on the fundamentals.

As of writing, I’ve completed just over 20% of the course. So far, I’ve refreshed my knowledge of HTML and CSS while learning additional CSS tools such as Flexbox, Grid, and Bootstrap. Currently I’m starting on the foundations of JavaScript.

Data Science

My data science goals are to gain a better foundation in statistics and ML. While I’ve completed some ML work in school, I’d like to gain more experience working with PyTorch and TensorFlow. I’m hoping to complete some work outside of Natural Language Processing, which is where my applied ML experience comes from.

I started this course two weeks ago and skipped the Introductory Python section since I already know the relevant Python fundamentals. Because of this, I’ve already completed 15% of the course. Hopefully I’ll have more to say when I start the probability section next.

Bonus

While not part of any certificate, I’ve been learning a lot about creating GitHub Pages websites with Jekyll themes. I’ve worked with Jekyll sites before, but this is the first site I’ve tried modifying to better fit my needs. Since Jekyll is a Ruby gem, I’ve had to learn a bit about Ruby to be able to manage all the relevant dependencies. Working on this site has been a lot of fun and it’s been enlightening to see that I’ve learned enough to be able to get everything working how I’d like it to. I’ve tried a couple of portfolio websites over the years, but knowing more about web development has given me more tools to be able to play around and change things as I go.

TL;DR

I’ve been learning a lot about web development this summer and next I’ll be adding probability and statistics fundamentals.
