Web Development

This month, I completed the MongoDB module in my Udemy course and updated my todo list application to have persistent storage (v2). After completing this, the course content updated to replace MongoDB with PostgreSQL, so on paper I’ve made little to no progress on the course this month. I sit at around a 77% completion rate currently.

My goals for the upcoming month are to finish the Databases section and the Authentication & Security section. I think this is a reasonable goal, though it depends on what else I have going on this month.

Career

The internet is full of advice on job hunting. Here’s all the right things to say, here’s all the wrong things to say, if you say X then it comes across as Y, etc. While some of this advice was ultimately helpful as I had my first in-person interview this month, a lot of it made me more anxious than I was beforehand. The advice is well-intentioned, and I did learn some valuable tips while looking, but ultimately a lot of the advice online assumes that you’re looking to fill a specific role, namely a competitive, high-status role at a high-profile company.

I think the most valuable advice I absorbed was to be excited about the job and ask questions (but not too many). I try to aim for around five questions each interview round to demonstrate my interest but not overwhelm the interviewer. I also just find it difficult to feign excitement, which is a blessing and a curse. It didn’t serve me well when in a “any job will do” position but it serves me well when I can afford to be a bit picky about my next career move.
